The Twelfth Step House offers more than housing. These four walls represent a place to belong, to heal, and to build stability within a supportive community.
Rooted in dignity, accountability, and care for one another, the house provides a safe, substance free living environment where individuals can focus on wellbeing, daily life, and what comes next. We believe stable housing creates the conditions for healing, and that connection changes outcomes.
The Twelfth Step House stands in a historic building constructed in 1909, a structure that has served as a place of shelter and community for more than a century. In the 1930s, the building became a Board and Lodge facility, housing individuals from all backgrounds, reflecting a long-held understanding that stable housing and daily structure matter.
The organization incorporated in 1978, grounded in the importance of sobriety, wellbeing, and shared responsibility. Since that time, thousands of residents have passed through the house, using it as a place to steady themselves, rebuild confidence, and move forward with greater clarity and purpose.
“Healing does not happen alone. It happens in places where people feel safe enough to stay.”
For decades, a dedicated Board of Directors guided the house with care and consistency, contributing more than 120 collective years of service. Their leadership anchored the organization through change and ensured the house remained a steady presence in the community.
As that long standing board concluded its service, a new and engaged Board of Directors stepped forward. Together, they selected a leader deeply rooted in the Iron Range, someone committed to honoring the house’s history while guiding its next chapter with transparency, compassion, and vision.
As the organization approaches its 50-year milestone, The Twelfth Step House continues to evolve while remaining grounded in its purpose. The house remains a place where stability, connection, and belonging take shape one day at a time.
History gives meaning to place. For generations, this building has offered shelter, routine, and connection. Each chapter adds to a larger story of people seeking stability and finding community. Honoring that history reminds us that healing often begins in ordinary spaces that consistently show up for people over time.
